I recently moved to Barcelona and, during this time, have got to know my new neighbours. I’ve calculated that hundreds of people could live in my Eixample block. Different lives with diverse ideals, routines and behaviours, all coexisting wall to wall, day after day.

A young man, eager to transcend the worldly troubles in his daily life, embarks on a Buddhist quest. What he finds is shocking as well as thought provoking. The visual style of this animation draws inspiration from two-thousand-year-old murals in the Buddhist caves in Dunhuang. The narration is delivered in the form of traditional opera by well-known Chinese shadow-play musicians and singers.

Kiki the canary only knows his cage and the old lady who feeds him. He dreams of flying with the free birds from outside. When at last the door of the cage stays open, he escapes and discovers the big outside where it’s necessary to know how to fly. Finally, being a free bird, it’s scary.

Luis lives by himself, and he is handling the quarantine quite badly. One day, while he is in the bathroom, he hears a voice coming from the air vent, calling for him. It’s Rosa, an enthusiastic neighbour who starts invading his privacy every time he goes into the bathroom. Luis puts up with every conversation with the politeness of a selfless neighbour but, for him, it’s a nightmare. It gets worse when she asks him for a favour.

Samuel Mbatha has worked on the Willis property for years. His relationship with the owner, Martin Willis, is a working one, strained by racial interaction. Samuel keeps to himself as much as possible. He leaves the property whenever he can as a means of escape. One night he returns to the house to find Martin in his car, in the process of gassing himself. Sam’s immediate reaction is to save Martin, but a combination of Martin’s refusal, Sam’s respect, and the barriers between them, convince Sam that he must not act.

- Isaac Rodríguez
Co-founder and member of Trieb Films and Avista Films. Focused on the field of documentary, his works have received more than twenty awards and a hundred selections at international festivals. Moreover, he works in other audiovisual fields such as experimental, musical and corporate. Graduated in Audiovisual Communication at Pompeu Fabra University and Creative Documentary Master at the same university. He has complemented his training with personalities such as Albert Serra, Mercedes Álvarez, María Cañas, Los Hijos and Martín Hernández. Isaac stands out in teaching cinema and audiovisual skills both in adolescents and in prisons. Additionally, he is being part of different film festivals, like the young jury at the Sitges Film Festival, Punto de Vista Film Festival and Mecal.

- Jan Soldat
Born in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz) in 1984. He has been making short films at Chemnitzer Filmwerkstatt since 2006. He studied film and television directing at the Konrad Wolf College of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg. He has presented his films many times at Berlinale and the International Film Festival Rotterdam. He won the CineMAXXI Award for best short film at the 8th Rome Film Festival.

After a first collaboration in 2015 with La Luna Productions for “Once Upon Three Times” one of the 10 films of the Canal+ Animated Collection “Draw Always!,” they make “A Story by Jeannot,” co-produced by Xbo films and broadcast on France 3 channel. They have just finished OLD HAG, whose screenplay was awarded in 2016 at the Annecy Film Market and pre-bought by Canal+.

- Nicolas Bianco-Levrin
After studying applied arts at the Duperré School in Paris, Nicolas Bianco-Levrin published about twenty youth albums as an illustrator. At the same time, he co-directed about thirty animated short films with Julie Rembauville, for which he designed the graphics. The films then travelled to many festivals around the world.

He has participated in “La Casa de las Flores” for Netflix.

Lives and works in Oslo. Jacobsson works with mixed media, mainly film. She is looking for new links between idea and technique, where the spontaneous and unpredictable intertwine with the conceptual. Jacobsson experiments with methods both in terms of directing on film and with analogue techniques such as drawing and sculpture. With this as a starting point, she creates playful and thoughtful works.

A multi-award winning animation artist. His films have been shown at the International Animated Film Association’s ANIWOW!, La Paz International Film Festival, China (Hangzhou) Animation Biennale for Young People, and many more. As an active member of the Chinese independent and experimental animation scene, he curated a number of important animation events in China. Xue currently teaches at Nanjing University of the Arts.
